Usually, no matter how bad my pain flare is, I wake up at 5am at the latest, do Tai Chi, have a blog post out by 9:30 edited a few times with a graphic, have eaten breakfast and downed 3 cups of coffee by 10am.

Presently I’ve been in a stress-induced pain flare. The pain has been worse than when I’ve first been diagnosed with fibromyalgia, when I would scream at night, sob while I read the bible, all because of the physical pain I was in. It was a nightmarish experience. Once I started the meds and began to get better, I thought that would never happen again.

The past 3 weeks I’ve had horrible insomnia, which has been a plague for me on and off for about two years. Last night I slept 12 hours.

Normally, this would not be a problem. But I’ve been applying for virtual volunteer positions, and I had an interview at 10am, and woke up at 10:55am.

Well, I may have missed an opportunity to make the world a better place, but my body feels much better and I may actually be able to do Tai Chi today.

What I mean to say is, for anyone else going through this, don’t give up, or as my favorite band Weezer would say, Keep Fishin’:

3 Mental and Spiritual Ways to Cope With a Pain Flare

When you’re stuck in a pain flare, it’s hard to envision the light at the end of the tunnel. Here are some small (albeit unorthodox) ways you can keep your head above the pain for perhaps a little while.

I’m keeping this list short due to the nature of pain flares. Some of you might be frustrated with all the multitudes of things you think you have to try to get out of a pain flare. I will tell you that some of these might help for only some of you, but these are generally good practices. There are no magic wands to make pain flares go away, but there are ways to make us feel more comfortable.

Why I’m Using Spiritual and Psychological Techniques

Generally, pain flares affect your mood, and your mood affects your pain flare. It’s like a dog chasing its tail that catches it and devours itself. Without cultivating positivity, escaping your pain flare is postponed.

Using Your Mind and Spirit to Escape a Pain Flare

  1. Write down (or tell Siri) 3 things your grateful for.

Each day you’re in a pain flare, take out your journal, your phone’s notepad app, a video or voice recording app, or if you can’t move, tell Alexa, Siri, or Google Assistant 3 things you’re grateful for. Pain flares are tiring, and 3 is all you need right now. No need for pages of gratitude to cultivate it.

2. Read your favorite book with a character you relate to the most. Let yourself cry.

If you relate the most to Jane Eyre and her suffering, read it. Relate to how tragic her life is. Throw a pity party and sob. You need the emotional release, but above all else, you need to relate to someone on an intimate, internal, mental level. Your friends may not understand, but you can make a fictional character understand.

3. Connect to a higher power.

This can be your version of God, the Buddha, Jesus, or the Universe. Connect with the energy around you with meditation, prayer, bed yoga (you can find videos on YouTube), coloring mandalas on your phone, or reading holy texts. Knowing there is something bigger than you gives you the peace that you are taken care of and that the pain flare will go away.

This is a little list, and I wanted to keep it small – pain flares can be overwhelming, and someone on the internet screaming at you to do 12 things might make you upset because you can’t get out of bed. You’re most likely phone surfing from your bed. But pain is cyclical, and this too will pass. Hugs to you.

Managing My Pain Well: Green Light Bathing and Rescue the Spirit Dietary Supplement

Oftentimes I find myself taking a burning hot shower 12 times a day because I’m in so much pain. In an earlier post I went over the benefits of green light and how I found significant pain reduction. The past few days I have turned my office space into a green light chamber by using green LED lights in a broken Wal-Mart floor lamp. So far, the past two days after using my green light chamber for four, I have:

  • only showered 3 times a day
  • gone on a walk without feeling winded or in pain
  • was able to finish writing all of my thank-you notes for wedding gifts
  • gotten it onnnnn…. OH BABY
  • been able to relax some away from pain

Let’s talk about that last bullet. My acupuncturist prescribed to me Rescue the Spirit. I shit you not, this stuff works better than klonopin in a crowded airport and you’re somehow a comedian doing standup in the security line. Rescue the Spirit is a dietary supplement, and if you have a natural pharmacy or acupuncturist you can call about med interactions then please do. Take care of yourself. And acupuncturists need jobs, so call one to talk about medication interactions.

I combine Rescue the Spirit with my green light chamber, the Dance Pop station on Spotify, and have myself a grand old time reading books and zoning out. Zoning out has been basically impossible since I started my bizarre health journey because of my pain. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still there, but man, can I take a nice staycation now.

Point of this article: green light chambers are good for pain, you should make one.

Secondary point: Rescue the Spirit is also great for managing pain and anxiety, call up your Chinese medicine professional.

Third point: Meditate for 10 minutes a day as soon as you wake up. Make it the absolute first thing you do in your green light chamber.

Fourth point: enjoy reduced pain if you suffer from fibromyalgia or migraines!

I was there a few short months ago – 2 days short of 3 months – and still suffer from the Postwedding Blues. The Postwedding Blues is a mix of anxiety and depression some brides experience after planning their wedding and walking down the aisle. I’ve got it bad. The shoe is the most important part of your day followed by the dress because of comfort. If your feet aren’t walking on clouds, then you will be in excruciating pain. I tried to wear Adrianna Papell kitten heels for my ceremony and went total bridezilla by the time the reception rolled around because I was in so much pain.

My first suggestion for brides with chronic pain? Don’t even think about kitten heels!

3.Converse Women’s Chuck Taylor All Star Sparkle Trim Low Top Sneaker

A dressed-down, lower profile version of the shoe above, these Converse Chuck Taylors are great for brides with edemas or swelling. A high top shoe can make it difficult to get your foot out of the wedding shoe if your legs and feet are swollen.

This one’s my favorite shoe of all time, my dream shoe, the shoe that would have been my wedding shoe if I could have found it in time. This shoe, this beautiful, comfy shoe, is for my LGBTQ+ brides and grooms, my chronic illness brides who love rainbows all over the spectrum, and brides who want a little color under their dress. You just want to have color and love comfort for this to be your wedding shoe.

5.Adrianna Papell Women’s Tonya Ballet Flat

When it comes to wedding shoes, brides love Adrianna Papell because of her delicate, fairytale designs. She even has Cinderella-like shoes to go with her theme. However, when you suffer from chronic pain, I don’t recommend harsh, firm plastic to encapsulate your feet in for a day. There is only one shoe by Adrianna Papell that I can recommend for a bride with chronic pain, and it is this one. It only covers your toe and heel, giving room for foot swelling, and is flat, allowing yourself to be free of the pain any kind of heel gives you, the bride.

Don’t put yourself through any kind of pain just to be pretty for one day of your life! It’s better to enjoy it!
